Network Expansion – 3 new chapters across 3 continents

A big welcome to our newest chapters at the Universities of Jamshedpur, Leipzig and Pennsylvania!

The end of April saw a milestone event in the history of the development of the oikos network. We have launched three new chapters, strengthening the oikos presence at Universities in Eastern India, Eastern Germany and the US Eastcoast. We are delighted to welcome oikos Jamshedpur, oikos Leipzig and oikos Penn as official members of the ever growing international oikos family!

oikos Penn - Chapter at the Ivey League University of Pennsylvania

The launch of oikos Penn was lead by Master Students of Environmental Studies Ilke Shaarat and Aishwarya  Nair at Penn, who were introduced to oikos through our Student Reporter Programme. Aishwarya has already been covering the World Water Forum in Marseille and Ilke will be blogging from the Rio+20 conference in June.

oikos Jamshedpur – Student Club SIGMA joining oikos network

The opening of oikos Jamshedpur is the fruitful outcome of a travel across India partaken by oikos Executive Board members after the regional meeting of oikos Chapters in Asia last January. Being a reputed business school – XLRI in Jamshedpur was one of the stops on the route of Eike Haas. Thanks to assistance of Prof. Madhukar Shukla from XLRI we were able to tie up with the Social Initiative Group for Managerial Assistance (SIGMA), a student-led association whose objective is to work on socially relevant projects. The similarities in the mission of oikos and SIGMA, which both design, promote and engage in a variety of socio-environmentally sustainable projects and programmes, were key in deciding to join forces and create a common platform.

oikos Leipzig – driven to enhance the integration of sustainability in research and teaching

The setting up of our Leipzig Chapter was triggered by Theresa Weinsziehr, alumna of oikos Cologne, who found an attentive audience of students irritated by the lack of sustainability related issues in their curricula. The personal objective of Claudia Friedrich, the President of oikos Leipzig, is to establish the specialisation in ‘Sustainable Economics’ in the study programme of the University of Leipzig.

It’s a great joy to see how the oikos movement towards sustainability in the education of Economics and Management is increasing its momentum. Look out for similar announcements in the future!
