On the occasion of World Environment Day, oikos Dhaka in collaboration with Global Affairs Forum, BRAC University organized a talk show and a poster competition on 9th June, 2009.
The chief guest and main speakers were civil rights activists and Ex-Advisor to the Caretaker government, Sufia Kamal, while the Special Guest was Mr. Philip Gain, the Director of the Society for Human and Environment Development.
Pro VC Dr Salehuddin Ahmed presided over the seminar while renowned Bangladeshi sociologist, Dr Piash Karim, chaired the sessions which ended with an Open Panel Discussion.
80 students were present during the seminar, while 10 students had submitted posters earlier. Phillip Gain highlighted the current situation in the ‘Sundarbans’-one of the largest Mangrove Forests in the world and situated between Bangladesh and India which is under threat. We then had the poster session during which prizes were given to the best three poster submissions, followed by the showcasing of a documentary film. All in all, this was a great success for oikos Dhaka especially because we joined hands with Global Affairs Forum, and jointly made a strong impact on the awareness through the participation of students.
