In April 2009 oikos Dhaka in BRAC University organized a seminar titled: WTO Negotiations and Bangladesh. The speakers comprised of the best WTO experts in the country. This was the first time our Vice Chancellor Dr Jamilur Reza Choudhury chaired a seminar organized by a student organization.
oikos Dhaka is a Local Chapter on BRAC University, Bangladesh. One of oikos’s regular international events is the Model WTO i.e. a simulation of the Ministerial Meet of the WTO which takes place in St. Gallen and Geneva, Switzerland. Although BRAC University students have participated in this simulation in the past, this time around the Model took place on the same time as our semester finals. We therefore thought about organizing this seminar and because of the immense support of our advisors Iftekharul Haque and Sakiba Zeba, not to mention the efforts and strong determination of the oikos Dhaka team, this seminar turned out to being an excellent one.
On 8 April 2009 oikos Dhaka in BRAC University organized a seminar titled: WTO Negotiations and Bangladesh. The chief guest of the seminar was Farooq Sobhan, President, Bangladesh Enterprise Institute and the Special guests were Dr Toufiq Ali and Dr Mostofa Abid Khan. The speakers comprised of the best WTO experts of our country. This was the first time our Vice Chancellor Dr Jamilur Reza Choudhury chaired a seminar organized by a BRAC University student organization. The first session was about basic WTO mechanisms and the speaker was Dr Mostofa Abid Khan, followed by the second session ‘WTO Negotiations and Bangladesh’. In the end students got the chance to ask questions to the Open Panel. The presence of students from different backgrounds, the presence of many Economics major students and the enthusiasm demonstrated during the Open Panel Discussion which compromised of all the speakers all made this event a fruitful one.
