Biography of Hans-Gert Pöttering
Hans-Gert Pöttering was born on 15 September 1945 in Bersenbrück (Lower Saxony, Germany). He never knew his father, who was killed in the final days of World War Two. This personal tragedy was instrumental in shaping his political involvement and his career in European politics.
He studied law, politics and history at the universities of Bonn and Geneva before he joined the Europrean Parliament in 1979. Mr. Pöttering worked for several councils and published several works concerning the coalescence of Europe before he was elected as the President of the European Parliament in 2007.
One of his most important fields of interest is the sustainable dialogue between cultures.
President Pöttering was honoured with multiplel prices, e.g. the European Excellence Award or several Grand Order from around the world.
