Witten/Herdecke University adheres to its educational concept and the implementation of its professed social objectives in pursuance of the following ideals:

  • Encouragement of freedom
  • Pursuit of truth
  • Cultivation of social responsibility

"Freedom is contingent upon responsibility. Members of Witten/Herdecke University assume personal responsibility for what they do and also for a sustained development of their university as a role model for university reforms in Germany. The priviledge of education in freedom implies social responsibility and an obligation to demonstrate exceptional commitment to the common good in society, environment and the scientific community."
