'expedition world' – the story of an award-winning student's journey to meet social entrepreneurs around the world is now available.

Tim Lehmann, Matti Spieker, Jan Holzapfel, world travellers from oikos Witten/Herdecke

Jan, Matti and Tim from oikos Witten/Herdecke have just published their book about their  project expedition WORLD – Dialogue for sustainable development. The project has been the winner of the oikos Award 2006.

Their book “expedition WELT – vom Abenteuer sich zu engagieren” presents a fresh glance of the world of social entrepreneurship. In 2006, the student authors traveled  through 25 developing countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa visiting 33 social entrepreneurs and their initiatives.

The book introduces a wide range of distinctive approaches of how the most urgent and recent social and environmental challenges can be tackled by innovative and entrepreneurial means. The in-depth interviews with social entrepreneurs enable the reader to peek into the world of civil engagement and leadership in the citizen sector.  Each chapter  describes how individuals contribute their personal beliefs to a more equal and just society in a new local setting – whether they visited a one man organization led by a social activist fighting his whole life against the vastly pollution of the live spending river Ganges in India or if they met peace noble price laureate 2006, Muhamud Yunus in Bangladesh, operating the frequently cited Grameen Bank with more than 10.000 employees.

The book provides not only tales on this new kind of idealistic heroes, but also invites  and supports particularly younger readers to become active in one of those initiatives.

Unfortunately up to now the book is only published in German language. It is available on the Publisher’s website www.oekom.de (when ordering, please cite one of the author’s names – Jan, Matti or Tim -  in the box “Bemerkung”), on amazon.de and can be ordered in every German bookstore.
