Save Rivers Signature Campaign

Prior to our preparations for the Summer 2009 Club fair titled Summersault, oikos Dhaka planned to take this opportunity for making an impact along with the voices that are being heard today to save the water in Dhaka.

“Bangladesh is a landmass which has been created by rivers over thousands of years. If we fail t protect our rivers, there is a risk of life coming to a standstill and our survival will be at stake. Urgent measures are therefore necessary to stop encroachment of rivers and water bodies throughout the country”

Jamilur Reza Chowdhury

Prior to our preparations for the Summer 2009 Club fair titled Summersault, oikos Dhaka planned to take this opportunity for making an impact along with the voices that are being heard today to save the water in Dhaka. The campaign was inaugurated by our VC Prof Dr Jamilur Reza Chowdhury. Numerous students and teachers took part in the event. We highlighted alarming facts such as the depletion of 3 meters of ground water annually, the millions of cubic feet of waste dumped by 7000 industrial units and such. We got the signatures of the Presidents of more than 20 clubs including, AIESEC in BRAC University, BU Cultural Club, BU Heritage Club, BU Film Club and the organizers of the fair, BIZ BEE. This showed the common support of all BRAC University clubs and forums that oikos Dhaka has created and we plan to send these signatures to the concerned government ministries on completion of the campaign. In another event of oikos Dhaka in collaboration with the Global Affairs forum in BRAC University on the Environment Day, we collected the signatures of the speakers of the event, noted members of our civil society, Sultana Kamal and Phillip Gain.
